Overview

This study presents modern approaches to solving diffraction problems, for example the ray, parabolic equation and comparison methods. A mathematical formulation of diffraction problems is given and the theoretical background and technical aspects of the various solution methods are discussed. A further feature is a detailed analysis of the final formula describing the asymptotic behaviour of the wave field. Systems treated in detail include wave fields concentrated in the vicinity of a boundary, and isolated waves such as ""whispering gallery waves"" and ""jumping ball waves"", as well as the point source wave field near a concave or convex boundary, which is important for applications.
