Shiny the Sea Star Surfs the Seas and Finds a Yangtze River Dragon

Overview

Shiny is an adventurous and enthusiastic young Sea Star who lives under the Santa Monica Pier, outside of Los Angeles, California. His adventures take children ages 2-7, and their adult caregivers, on treasure hunts using the globe's major rivers as a unifying theme. Having followed this entertaining series of short trips to the world's major rivers, children will have a visual grasp of the earth's geography and an introduction to a number of population centers and cultures.Shiny the Sea Star Surfs the Seas and Finds a Yangtze River Dragon is the first in this series.Shiny wants to give his Mom a dragon statue she dreamed about one night. Handy the Octopus, owner of Handy's Adventure Travel Store, explains that we are all connected by water and that Shiny can surf across the Pacific Ocean to the Yangtze River in China where dragons are very popular. Handy gives him a Starpack, a map and a compass for his adventure. Shiny makes friends with Yo-Yo the Red Carp Fish, his Yangtze River Guide, and Legs the Octopus, owner of the store that has the perfect statue. They teach Shiny about dragons, the Great Wall of China and dragon boat races. Shiny surfs home with his Mom's dragon statue and a new toy dragon boat for his collection. He tells his Mom that he learned that because we are all connected by water we can travel to rivers everywhere, and make new friends. This book is colorfully illustrated using Origami paper cut-outs, inspired by the work of the pioneering artist Matisse. Shiny's travel adventure sparks the imagination of young children and their caregivers as they learn together about the rivers and oceans that connect us all. This book is also available in Spanish.
