OverviewShiny is an adventurous and enthusiastic young Sea Star who lives under the Santa Monica Pier, outside of Los Angeles, California. His adventures take children ages 2-7, and their adult caregivers, on treasure hunts using the globe's major rivers as a unifying theme. Having followed this entertaining series of short trips to the world's major rivers, children will have a visual grasp of the earth's geography and an introduction to a number of population centers and cultures.Shiny the Sea Star Surfs the Seas and Finds a Mississippi River Paddlewheel Boat is the second in this series.Shiny sees a picture of a Mississippi River Paddlewheel Boat on a library poster featuring Mark Twain. His favorite Librarian tells him these boats travel up and down the Mississippi River. After getting permission from his Mom to go in search of this boat to add to his toy boat collection, he goes off to see Handy the Octopus, owner of Handy's Adventure Travel Store. Handy gives him a Starpack, a map and a compass for his adventure.Handy explains that because we are all connected by water, Shiny can surf his way to the Mississippi River. Handy also tells him about the famous road Route 66 that ends at the Santa Monica Pier and begins in Chicago. Shiny needs to take a water route, however, because he is a Sea Star. Once Shiny reaches the Mississippi, he meets up with Archie the Turtle in New Orleans. Archie, named for the famous St. Louis Arch, tells him all about the beautiful city and takes him to the Mardi Gras Parade. After catching beads thrown from a float, Shiny is off to win a toy paddlewheel boat from the carnival run by Archie's turtle friend, Sam. After winning his boat, Shiny surfs home to the Pacific Ocean. He tells his Mom that he learned that because we are all connected by water, we can travel to rivers everywhere and make new friends. This book is colorfully illustrated using Origami paper cut-outs, inspired by the work of the pioneering artist Matisse. Shiny's travel adventure sparks the imagination of young children and their caregivers as they learn together about the rivers and oceans that connect us all. This book is also available in Spanish.
