Table of ContentsReviewsBy Davin Salvagno, Bestselling Author of Thieves of Purpose and Finding Purpose at Work. Humorous, insightful, informative, inspiring, challenging and refreshing. These are just a few words that I would use to describe the book you hold in your hands. Having spent almost two decades serving Fortune 100 companies in senior leadership roles in marketing, operations, and HR, I can confidently say that I deeply wish this book had existed 20 years ago while I was trying to navigate the complexity of leading people, while managing and adapting to ever changing processes. Tammy has brilliantly combined her passion for both people and processes in this work, providing a deep research of the background of HR systems and the foundations of the HR field itself, along with engaging and entertaining stories of learning moments to reframe our thinking on how we appreciate leading and stewarding the most precious resource on earth, people. This book is not just for HR leaders, it's for any leader who sees themselves as a steward of the people they lead, especially CEOs and business owners. In 2001, my life and my career path changed when I met one CEO who embodied the very principles Tammy outlines in this book. His name was Jim Sinegal, Founder and CEO of Costco Wholesale. I was a young ambitious newly promoted marketing manager at the ripe age of 21, when Jim conducted one of his legendary store walks at warehouse #374. Jim walked up to me, put his hand out and said, ""Hi, I'm Jim, what's your name?"" Now I knew his name was Jim, because he was wearing a name badge that said Jim (and everyone knew who Jim was) and he knew my name was Davin, because I was wearing a name badge that said Davin. But despite the deeply complex and efficient system of name badges that Costco had put in place, Jim wanted to make an authentic human connection. So as he continued to shake my hand and look straight in my eyes, he asked, ""Davin why do you work at Costco? What are we doing w Author InformationTammy grew up in a working-class suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, as the third of four children. Fun fact-her parents named all four children with initials TAC, so they were the four TACs. Her family was a mix of white- and blue-collar workers, which shaped her strong work ethic and adaptability. Though she excelled in school and initially pursued electrical engineering at Ohio State University, life took an unexpected turn. She moved to California to live with her father, and although it wasn't a straight line, she earned a bachelor of science in business administration with a minor in human resources from CSU Bakersfield. During her early years in California, Tammy balanced late-night shifts serving cold beers to ironworkers with daytime roles in HR, working her way up from an administrative assistant temp to an HR coordinator. These experiences gave her hands-on exposure to the workings of human resources: seasonal recruitment, employee verifications, benefits, employee inquiries, payroll processing-even creating bilingual employee handbooks. In the early '90s, a transformative faith experience led Tammy to spend a year traveling the world, sharing her story of meeting her Savior Jesus through song. But when she returned, unexpected opportunities steered her back to corporate life, and she faced a crossroads: return to the mission field or reenter corporate America. Guided by the wise counsel of Fred, a family friend and insurance executive, she realized she didn't have to choose between her faith and career. Fred reminded her that corporate America needed Jesus just as much as tribes in distant jungles. So, with this new outlook, she became an HR systems consultant, specializing in JD Edwards, and has since spent more than thirty years advising hundreds of clients across nearly every industry, solving complex HR technological challenges with passion and dedication. Tammy is driven by a mission beyond systems consulting-loving others, encouraging the downtrodden, and caring for people as deeply as she cares for their HR systems. This obsession inspired her to begin to write what you now have before you, believing that each reader (that's you!) is not accidental but is reading it for a greater reason. Her enthusiasm, combined with over three decades of human resources technology experience, shines through every page, offering valuable insights and inspiring your faith, with perhaps a few smiles along the way.
