Overview

Shine On is a celebration of the beauty of the world around us. Full-color photographs of horses-mares and foals, stallions surveying their domains, foals at play-combine with inspirational text to help us experience the wonder of these majestic animals ... and find moments of joy in our own lives. The words and images of Shine On enable us-if only for a minute-to see past the clutter of cell phones, daily distractions, and the stress of everyday life to find moments of peace in nature. They encourage us to Shine on! and be spectacular. Horses symbolize of so much that is wonderful in our lives-beauty, grace, movement, kindness, freedom. Often, when we interact with horses or watch them from a distance, we see them as reflections of ourselves-our hopes and dreams for love and warmth and companionship and joy.

Author Information

Cathy Herbert: I was invited to contribute to the Twice As Shiney Facebook page, on which the book is based, in January 2014 and continued to contribute to it until the end of October. It was an amazing experience--to interact with individuals from all over the world, united by their love of nature and horses. To create the editorial content for the book, I reviewed the Facebook page posts, selected the words and images from the page that had resonated most strongly with the audience, and edited them for publication. Together, words and images reflect a sense of joy and amazement at all that is beautiful in our world. I am grateful to all the people who liked and commented on the Facebook page. During my involvement, the number of likes grew from 100,000 to 600,000 individuals. I have worked as a writer for more than 30 years. I began writing essays and fiction about two years ago. In 2014, my work appeared in The Delmarva Review, The Lascaux Review, The Kelsey Review, Meat for Tea, and Verse. In 2014 and 2015, I have written articles about horse training and management for The Equine Journal and Horse & Rider. DandeLyon Vredenburg: Working on this book was a culmination of thoughts and revelations that I experienced daily with my horses and that I communicate daily through postings on the Facebook page Twice As Shiney, whic has more than 618,000 likes. There is a quiet strength and honesty that resides within a horse, a simple elegance and truth that I have been able to connect with and apply to my daily life. My intention with this book is to share a glimpse of the innate beauty we ALL possess and give the readers a shortcut into those soulful moments--so that they too share that experience. My photographs, featured widely in Shine On and on the Facebook page, provide a profound peek into the quiet graceful living of equines--a from of grace in nature that many people long for daily. Unstaged and candid, the photographs convey how we all strive to live; free, unfettered, and untarnished. My affinity for words coupled with my passion for the graceful nature of horses has allowed me to feed my spirit and share that message with the readers. I have a deep sense of gratitude about having the opportunity to share sacred moments with the intention that it will lend to awakenings within the readers. It is my mantra that we are all beautifully imperfect, and THAT is worth celebrating!
