Overview

This book deals with six critical junctions in early modern Sweden between 1538 and 1810. It highlights intense periods of change when a prevailing system of government was challenged and replaced by something radically different – a new political regime. Drawing on both history and the social sciences, this book presents a novel interpretation of Sweden’s early modern political history. Sweden’s conflict-ridden history is highly relevant as an example to understand the process of state formation in early modern Europe. How did the turbulent changes in government affect Sweden’s subsequent development into a modern, democratic state?

Author Information

Professor of history at Stockholm University, Sweden. His main research interest concerns the political history of Sweden and Scandinavia from the early modern period up until the twentieth century. His publications address local administration in Sweden and Finland, the impact of tax farming, royal propaganda and military organization as well as municipal conflicts over the organisation of welfare services. Associate Professor of History at Stockholm University, Sweden. He has published on state formation, institutions and organisations in the early modern period. He is currently leading a research project on welfare cities in the Nordic countries, c. 1870–1920, investigating the increase in municipal responsibilities for public services and the common good. He has previously studied political conflicts over the organisation of public services. Scherp recieved his PhD in History from Stockholm University, Sweden. He has published on political and social history during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, particularly focusing on institutions, democratization, and power relations. He is currently employed as an editor at the Swedish Parliamentary Library, and is responsible for publications and the content of exhibitions of the Swedish Parliament. He teaches on a recurrent course about the history of democracy at Stockholm University.
