Reviews

SHIFT is a must-read for any individual but, most importantly, every athlete. Athletes have to transition from offense to defense, defense to offense. We have to handle whatever our opponents give us based on our own strategy. This book forced me to really sit down and ask the tough questions to better understand what my shift will look like for my next transition. Jonathan does a great job being transparent with his own stories and experiences while including familiar, current events and occurrences to make the book a seamless read. -Amobi Okugo, professional soccer player, Forbes 30 Under 30, founder, A Frugal Athlete Jonathan brings his wealth of knowledge and personal experience working with pro athletes through transition. In SHIFT, he takes athletes on a journey of discovery and inspiration that will not only impact their current reality but also prepare them for a successful shift to life beyond their sport. -Dior Ginyard, Forbes 30 Under 30, director, player affairs NFL Players Association Finally, there is a book which addresses the elephant in the room for so many athletes. Sooner or later, all professional athletes have to retire, and now they have a toolkit to manage this critical transition in the life journey. Jonathan does a brilliant job of turning a major life challenge into an opportunity and self-discovery. SHIFT is the ultimate playbook to winning where it matters most-life! -Misha Sher, global head of sport, entertainment, and culture, MediaCom Jonathan's take on addressing the challenge of what's next in life after the game is powerful. SHIFT: The Athlete's Playbook guides athletes through a simple but undervalued concept-the act of sitting down and making time to think about who you are and what you want to do. From the importance of shifting focus, attention, and mindset, coupled with the understanding of who you are through your values, the story you tell yourself and what really matters to you-the process works. Through his own story and experience moving into his next chapter, Jonathan provides a tool to help you unlock the power of self-awareness and the ability to shift your identity as you grow-an invaluable resource. -Danielle Berman, founder and CEO, Tackle What's Next A book like this is long overdue! After over forty years coaching in college, it is clear to me that young men and women need help when their athletic career is over. While the graduates are prepared for the workforce or graduate school academically, most are not prepared to give up a sport they have played for many years. Moving from a very competitive sporting environment to a more recreational environment or no sports at all is very difficult. SHIFT will guide athletes from the sporting environment to the real world. It is a must-read for all collegiate and professional athletes making the transition to life. -Dr. Jay Martin, head coach, Ohio Wesleyan University, winningest coach of men's soccer in the NCAA SHIFT is a must-read for everyone, but all athletes should be required to read this book! As athletes, we often get so caught up in our sport and our identity as an athlete that we lose sight of the other parts of life and the fact that there is a life beyond sport. This book will help guide you through steps to better understand and prepare for those life transitions that are often overlooked. The fact that Jonathan is so transparent about his own experiences adds so much value and relevance and makes this such an enjoyable and worthwhile read. -Nicole Barnhart, professional soccer player, National Women's Soccer League Players Association Executive Committee
