Table of ContentsReviews"Sheltered But Not Protected is a must-read for everyone who wants to better understand how extreme fundamentalism is a predator's playground, and fatally flawed when it comes to protecting the vulnerable from abuse. Justin Woodbury is candid and entertaining in his retelling of his experience of sexual, spiritual and psychological abuse in a church community where people were seemingly sheltered from ""the world"" but not protected from true evil. -Kelly Downing, Survivor Sanctuary ------------ ""This book will make you feel angry, uncomfortable, and shocked about how far sexual predators will go to manipulate their victims into believing their actions are justified. I commend Justin for being vulnerable in exposing not just the sexual abuse he endured from members of his congregation but also the psychological, physical, and emotional abuse that haunted him into adulthood. Justin also shares stories of children and teens in his church who were subjected to similar abuse by members of their congregation and by their parents. Sheltered but Not Protected will help people understand that forgiveness is crucial for healing from abuse, but that we must be advocates for those who are victims of abuse."" -C.R ""The book starts out with an account by Justin's wife, Emily, of what life was like living with a survivor of child sexual abuse. I believe many other girlfriends and wives will find this helpful. It sets the stage so you are warned ahead of time that you will be wading into some deep water as Justin takes over telling his story. This book is one that should be read by anyone concerned about the protection of children. It is an insightful look at the darkness that can thrive in high control groups in the name of ""godliness"". ""Sheltered But Not Protected"" is also a story of the redeeming Grace of God who has given Justin a powerful voice that he is using to help protect others. I highly recommend this book."" -Hope Anne Dueck, Executive Director of A Better Way ""Justin Woodbury's 'Sheltered But Not Protected' is an excellent expose which sheds light on the fundamental church's desire to be insular and a nation unto itself - accountable to no government or people. While the obvious situation Justin has to cope with is the sexual abuse from an older congregant woman, equally - if not more - important is the emotional abuse Justin suffered from the Preacher of his original home church, who was aided and abetted by clueless and spineless church deacons and the many fearful, dictatorial, head of household bullies. While Justin's story is significant, it is important to note that from this one small church that Justin attended, there could be so many more stories of how the Preacher and that church brought misery, ruin, and even death to the people it abused either directly or by proxy."" - Stephen Davis" Sheltered But Not Protected is a must-read for everyone who wants to better understand how extreme fundamentalism is a predator's playground, and fatally flawed when it comes to protecting the vulnerable from abuse. A child survivor of church abuse, he decided to start his life over at age thirty in Littleton, Colorado. There, he met his best friend, soulmate, and love of his life, Emily, and they happily married a year later and started their family.Justin began advocating for victims of abuse after he held his son in his arms for the first time and realized the weight of responsibility he would have as a father. Since then, Justin has made it his life's mission to speak out against abuse in all forms and to be a voice for victims, especially those who were abused in a religious setting. When he's not working, Justin enjoys camping, hiking, and, most of all, spending time with Emily and their two beautiful children, Jackson and Juliette.
