Overview

"This ""Children's Books Super Quick Read"" is designed for kids grades 4 - 7 and actually anyone interested in learning about sharks, but simply does not have the time nor desire to read large amounts of material with complicated words and concepts. Complete with ""fun"" illustrations, key facts are presented in a concise, classroom-type manner. To emphasize important points, interaction occurs between the ""Ocean Rescue Squad"" shark figure, and ""Carrots"", a fictional character. In this book you will learn how sharks play an important role in helping to clean and protect our oceans, which in turn leads to cleaner air for us to breathe. They also help to reduce global warming and support the fishing industry, and create income for businesses like restaurants, grocery stores and tourist destinations. You will also learn they are not as harmful to humans as they are made out to be, but rather the other way around, and why people are killing over 100,000,000 sharks each year using irresponsible fishing methods that destroy habitats and countless other species as well. Our oceans are already showing signs of damage as a result of dwindling shark populations. Through education and awareness we can promote responsible fishing practices that will hopefully prevent sharks from becoming extinct, for their sake as well as ours."

Reviews

Reviews for Sharks: Ocean Rescue Squad Andy, age 9 All my friends should read this book. Carrots is funny. I learned a lot about sharks. It doesn't make sense that we use sharks for making furniture.... Shark finning is disgusting. Isobel, age 10 I really liked it! Learned lots of facts about sharks...enjoyed so much I could have read more, and I like the shark drawings. Millie, age 12 The drawings help me to understand better about how sharks are endangered species, which I never thought about before. The length of the book is perfect for giving enough information to remember and understand. I'd recommend this book to all my friends. Carissa, age 12 I found the book very interesting and educational. I really liked it because it was a quick and easy read. Paul W. ...Nathan is 12...and (thought) it would be perfect for someone Madeline 's age. He also thought it would be very educational. He suggested a cartoon as well. Madeline...thought this was appropriate for her age, kids 7-9 and liked that there were some challenging words in it...She also enjoyed the artwork... Heather, Dan, and Ben (age 12) A. Carol Perkins...has taken a topic that kids are passionate about and made it into an easy-to-read book that makes learning about sharks fun. Her writing connects to children at a level that is easy to understand and keeps them engaged right to the end. As a family we enjoyed reading and learning about sharks and the environment, and it created continuous conversation even after we had finished reading it. We look forward to reading more books by Carol and supporting her desire to write. We know that the next book will be just as engaging. Diana, age 40, software developer I enjoyed reading this book with my 2 children. For such a short read, we learned a lot! The drawings really help to remember the information and make the reading fun. I am motivated to learn more about what we can do to help slow the fishing industry. This would be a fun book to help teachers generate conversation in the classroom around our current environmental issues. Cassie, age 16 I definitely would recommend this book to anyone especially people who are uneducated about this topic because it's extremely important. I am still learning about sharks, but I am glad I know more information and I am more aware. Rhegan, age 19 I really liked how the book informs the reader all about the importance of sharks in an easy way to understand! I would recommend this book for younger audiences looking to learn about sharks. Taylor P. My name is Taylor and I approve of this book. It has opened my eyes to sharks and I no longer worry about swimming in the ocean. They truly are the oceans rescue squad! Jaws has truly created a bad name for sharks where this book has corrected that image. Cayley W. I enjoyed the book very much! It was a very interesting read and I learned a lot from it. I was shocked at how much sharks help our ecosystem but also now inspired to want to bring more awareness to others about how important sharks are. Tricia P. I really appreciated the fact it was such a quick read and that I learned so much flipping through the pages. It has given me a new appreciation of sharks. It's a shame that movies have made them into such terrifying creatures. I believe this is a book that would benefit all ages.

Author Information

Hello, I'm a writer at heart. I love to learn, love kids and their honesty, and their excitement to promote change for the better. I love all animals, respect the environment and love to have fun. I also believe every living thing on this planet is here working together for a reason. We all have a purpose and the more we learn about the purpose each of us have, the more we, as humans, can work together to protect those most vulnerable.Working over 40 years in a business career as an analyst was truly exciting and challenging. However, I found there were so many other things I hadn't learned about, like environmental awareness, animal protection and the impact each species has on our planet, to name a few. I remember when my family was young, we shared many experiences like travelling, taking in museums, theatrical performances, theme parks, zoos and even dinosaur excavating. It was just like being a kid again. I had just as much fun as they did. Sharing those wonderful experiences inspired me to incorporate my desire to explore different subjects, and my passion for writing into the creation of a series of enjoyable, educational books for kids; to help them learn about absolutely everything under the sun and beyond. Recognizing we, as the human race, need to respect our planet and understand the role we play in preserving it for our future generations, I chose to focus my first series on Endangered Species. Sadly, there are so many, that I could spend the rest of my life writing about the importance of each. My intention is to create informative books in a unique manner, bringing together proven facts and information that will help kids who do not have the time nor desire to read a large amount of material with complicated words and concepts, and present them in a way they can easily and quickly be read and understood. My hope is that it will also encourage their continuous learning.Being a grandmother, I realize some people of my generation may not be as open to change as younger ones. Our children and grandchildren are more open to change and new scientific discoveries that impact our planet. They want to correct mistakes of the past, as they have a significant interest in preserving the health of our planet. That is why I chose a younger age group; one that will shape the future.I look forward to researching and writing about many endangered species and hopefully spread the awareness of their value to encourage a more positive approach worldwide to protect them, as they do play a significant role in our survival. Why a.k.a. Carrots?I feel that if we present large amounts of technical or challenging information in a more simplified and enjoyable manner, it encourages people to read. Interaction between fun characters and illustrations such as those presented in my book(s) help to explain those challenging and/or technical concepts, and also helps us to remember what we learned. As kids, my siblings and I would always raid my mother's garden. Peas were the favourite. I ate so many one day, I was violently ill for over a day and consequently could not eat another garden pea. Not to be left out of the raids, I had to pick another vegetable. The next best one was carrots. The only drawback was that I had to clean the dirt off the carrot first, but found spitting on it, then wiping it on my pants worked really well. Because of all the carrots I ate, that became my nickname, and it has stuck with me ever since. It's kind of a fun name, and I like to have fun. I have always loved learning about all sorts of stuff and having a bit of fun while doing it helps me to better understand what I'm reading. It also helps me to remember it too. I hope you have fun as well, discovering interesting things about endangered species and why we need to protect them.
