Khan is a professor emeritus in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. His research interests focus on intelligent systems, automation in driving, policy and planning, and safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation. This research is being applied to urban and multimodal transportation. His honors and awards include the Lifetime Achievement Award, Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers CITE and Carleton University Academic/Research Award, Fellowship of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), and Fellowship of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering. He has carried out research/consulting projects for the United Nations; federal, provincial, and municipal governments in Canada; and private sector companies/societies in the USA, Japan, and Canada. Ata M. Khan has authored or co-authored one textbook, 11 Chapters in books, and 175 papers in refereed journal and conference proceedings. Susan A. Shaheen is a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at renowned UC Berkeley, USA, where she co-directs the Transportation Sustainability Research Center (TSRC) of the Institute of Transportation Studies. She has authored 79 journal articles, over 150 reports and proceedings articles, over 30 book chapters, and co-edited three books. She received the 2017 Roy W. Crum award from the Transportation Research Board (TRB) for her distinguished achievements in transportation research. She is the current Chair of TRB's Executive Committee and served as Vice Chair in 2020. In May 2016, she was named one of the top 10 academic thought leaders in transportation by the Eno Foundation.
