Sharanagati – Surrender, Letting go: A Selection of Teachings on Surrender

Overview

Following the warm reception of the first two volumes Aham Sphurana and Vichara, which brought readers into the living presence of Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and the vibrant spirit of the Ashram, Sharanagati turns with equal clarity to a companion pillar of his teaching: Surrender. For Bhagavan, Surrender is not a sentiment but a direct, uncompromising way to dissolve the ego and rest in the natural peace of the Self. Drawing from rare dialogues and finely selected teachings and stories, this volume explores Surrender as both practice and fruition–how partial Surrender ripens into effortless, total letting-go; how trust in the Divine displaces anxiety and doership; and how Grace becomes unmistakably operative when one ceases to resist. Practical pointers illuminate what it means to ‘give up everything and keep quiet’, while addressing real questions of work, family, karma, and the seeming paradox of effort and non-doing. In the spirit of Bhagavan’s living wisdom, Sharanagati is an essential companion for seekers drawn to awakening through Surrender–an invitation to yield the mind into the Heart, abide as Silence, and discover that perfect peace is not attained, but revealed, when nothing is held back and everything is given up in the spirit of Ananya Sharanagati–Absolute Surrender.

Author Information

Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, the Sage of Arunachala, born in 1878, is one of the most famous and most recent of India's wealth of sages, Saints and spiritual Masters. As a young man of sixteen he had a spontaneous awakening. He left his home in Madurai and made his way to Tiruvannamalai and the holy mountain, Arunachala. He lived for many years, alone and in silence, on and around the mountain, which he never left. In the 1920s the present ashram was constructed. Here he lived and taught until his death in 1950. Many of this Maha Rishi's (Great Seer) students and devotees, who, through him gained Self-realisation, passed on to their own students Sri Ramana Maharshi's practice of Self-enquiry, using the question, 'Who am I?' Since 2005, Open Sky Press published over thirty-two spiritual books in English, German, Russian, French and Spanish, as well as Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Eight full length films are available on YouTube. Some forty lengthy interviews with Indian and Western Spiritual Masters are available on www.johndavid.international together with a host of short wisdom films. Nan Yar – Bhagavan’s essential teachings – is available as a modern beautifully designed Art booklet in four European and three Indian languages. A large dedicated team living together in the Open Sky House Community has meticu-lously selected, formatted and edited texts from the full Aham Sphurana manuscript resulting in the publication of Aham Sphurana – A Glimpse of Self Realisation in 2022, followed by this 2025 release: Vichara – Self Enquiry, Who am I? John David is an English spiritual teacher, author, and film director. For 20 years he has been dedicated to guiding and supporting people interested in spiritual awakening. Currently he is based in the Open Sky House, International Spiritual and Arts communities in Germany, Ukraine and Spain, where he holds regular Meetings and Retreats.
