Shakespeare Sonnets as Scenes: The Sonnet as a Storytelling Device

Overview

The idea of Shakespeare Sonnets as Scenes is to perform a sonnet, not as a poem, but as a mini-ply, with a beginning, a middle, and an end. By starting with sonnets using storylines to tell a short story, the actor has an opportunity to discover Shakespeare in a way that is not frightening or intimidating and actually can be fun. By using Shakespeare Sonnets as Scenes to introduce students to Shakespeare, the students can take a small bite of Shakespeare and get used to him before tackling his larger and more complex plays. After all, a 14-line sonnets takes an average of only two minutes to perform, making sonnets much easier to stage than an entire Shakespeare production!
