Overview

In the same way, Shakespeare's true religious beliefs seem shrouded in mystery. In this accessible study, medievalist and Shakespearean Velma Richmond begins by discussing the roots of Shakespeare's dramatic traditions, the backgrounds of the Shakespeare and Arden families and some of the religious conflicts of the day. She goes on to examine the surprisingly strong evidence, drawn primarily from the Bard's comedies and late romances themselves, for Shakespeare's true religious beliefs.

"""Thorough and detailed....Richmond's book is necessary reading for those who would continue to explore Shakespeare's Catholicism. Religion and the Arts Serves as a useful reminder of the complex religious tenor in England following the Dissolution. Frances K. Barasch, Shakespeare Bulletin, Spring 2002 Shakespeare and Catholicism could hardly be a more topical subject...well worth reading for its discussion of Shakespeare's sources. Literature and Theology 16.1 (March 2002)"
