Overview

Cephas head is pounding when he wakes up and finds himself in the remains of a battle. Panicking, he pulls himself to a relatively safe spot as he tries to remember what led him here. For the rest of the book, he is trying to find his way out of a fight where he doesn't know who the enemy is or why they want him dead, while he sorts through his scattered memories to piece together his past. Meanwhile, Ethelwynne's life is settling back into a normal routine when Captain Henryk arrives and asks her when was the last time she saw Cephas. Once again she leaves behind everything she knows and sets out across the country. This time the amulet isn't guiding her to a key, but to a person. As she chases Cephas across the human, elven, and dwarven lands, whispers tell her that Cephas is helping the dwarves start a war to destroy them all.
