Awards

  • Winner of Winner, 1996 International Association of Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysts Award for Advancing the State of the Art in Law Enforcement Intelligence Analysis.

Overview

An annotated bibliography for students as well as a reference work for policy makers, this book contains dozens of illustrations, tables of terrorist data, a name and pseudonym index, lists of booksellers and dealers, journals, and a catalog of databases that address the topics covered. Prunckun cites books, journal articles, reports, and theses spanning some 200 years, from the late 1700s up to and including 1993. The bibliography presents such topics as anarchism, arms dealing, civil war, executive protection, fascism, guerrilla warfare, the Gulf War, hijacking, the IRA, media coverage, neo-Nazi activities, the PLO, piracy, political police, racial violence, riots, state terrorism, and terrorist weapons. The book also has a special section on fictional works dealing with political violence and terrorism. In addition, the author reviews the literature on political terrorism, examining terrorism's historical genesis, its purpose and objectives, and its tactics and targets.

Reviews

Prunckun's book differs from its predecessors in its breadth of scope...Recommended for readers who need a broad perspective introduction. CHOICE ...an ample resource listing books, periodicals, and databases. American Reference Books Annual Prunckun has compiled an impressive amount of material on a subject which daily makes the world's headlines. Because of its comprehensive nature and its clear presentation, Shadow of Death is a quality bibliography on a perilous and wide-ranging subject. Reference Reviews ...a useful bibliography of diverse materials...This reference work has a unique feature, missing from too much of the literature: photographs, mostly of places and things, carefully interspersed throughout the book. This feature 'enlivens' the content...much to be learned from the author's techniques... Asil A splendidly comprehensive annotated bibliography for policy makers and researchers...Recommended. Surveillant
