OverviewThis research was conducted to assess the long-term durability of epoxy resin lining for use in lining potable water mains. For old water mains in good structural condition, but in need of rehabilitation, cleaning and lining is the most economical option. Traditional cement mortar lining is susceptible to long-term damage from soft, aggressive waters. Epoxy resin, an alternative, has been found to have high durability and higher hydraulic capacity, particularly in soft, aggressive waters. This study gathered historical information on installed epoxy resin linings in water mains and documented the effectiveness of these linings in protecting cast iron or steel water mains. In addition, accelerated life cycle tests were conducted to assess long-term performance on epoxy resin linings to help utilities estimate the useful life of this material.
