Service and Sacrifice: Extraordinary Nova Scotians in the Great War

Overview

A narrative portrait of ten remarkable Nova Scotians who served in the First World War, from Indigenous and Black soldiers to nursing sisters. Nowhere in Canada was the impact of the First World War felt more keenly than right here in Nova Scotia. Stories of Nova Scotian soldiers and their outstanding record of service are plentiful. While it's impossible to tell them all, Service and Sacrifice: Extraordinary Nova Scotians in the Great War highlights ten remarkable stories of service and sacrifice to acknowledge and honour all who wore our country's uniform. From the brave actions of Indigenous soldier Sam Glode, who removed more than 450 mines and demolition charges from roads and bridges over two days, to Jerry Jones, a Black soldier from Colchester County who was recognized only posthumously for his bravery, to Nursing Sister Minnie Follette, whose devoted service to wounded and dying soldiers ultimately cost her life, this diverse group of Nova Scotians is representative of the more than thirty thousand who accepted the difficult duty of citizenship and acted on that duty, regardless of creed or custom. With more than 90 images, Service and Sacrifice - authored by the former curator of the Army Museum Halifax Citadel - shares these stories in a way that honours the sacrifices made, inspires renewed interest in the rich military history of Nova Scotia, and encourages a fuller understanding of the real people who gave so much of themselves for others.
