Overview

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease that frequently involves the oral mucosa and skin. It has a prevalence rate of 0.5- 2.2%, occurs more commonly in women than men with a mean age of occurrence of 55 years. It is a potentially malignant condition with a malignant transformation rate of 0.4-5.6%. Etiology is unknown. During recent years it has become more evident that the immune system has a primary role in the development of the disease. Several investigators proposed that psychological factors have a strong association with lichen planus. It is suggested that psychological factors with their presumed effects on the immune system constitute one of the major causative agents of oral lichen planus. Psychological factors like high stress and anxiety levels are associated with lichen planus.
