The Reverend Dr. Leonard Kalkwarf has been an active part of the Greenspring Village community (GSV) since 2004. A key contributor to Greenspring's religious community, he served as interim minister during a Village Church Pastoral vacancy, was chairman of the Church Council, is a Pastoral Associate, and frequently the Liturgist and the Celebrant of the Sacrament. Len wrote, produced, and played the role of Pontius Pilate in a Maundy Thursday religious drama for more than 10 years, and leads monthly and weekly Bible Classes for the community. In 2019 he gave the Veterans Day address, normally given by a former high ranking military officer, for which he received a standing ovation. An avid walker, he walks two to three miles every morning even in his 90s, and encourages his fellow residents to be active by organizing the GSV billiard and horseshoe tournaments. He was the horseshoe champion for nine years. Competing in the 2019 Northern Virginia Senior Olympics he won 10 gold and 3 silver medals. A presidential history buff, Len visited all the Official Presidential Libraries and other presidential sites; and authored the book Exploring the Libraries of the U.S. Presidents. For ten years he had a quarterly program on GSV TV about various presidents. A frequent presenter at GSV History Forum, he spoke on such subjects as former presidents, the Constitutional Convention, left-handedness, Separation of Church and State, Margret Chase Smith, Jefferson Davis, and the history of marriage. He is the author of 9 books.
