Overview

This is a single volume reprint of Dale Manuel's five self published works on the seacoast fortifications along the American South Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Descriptions of all periods of fortification are covered from the colonial period through the modern concrete era--the golden age of fortification construction. Second System Forts of Hampton Roads the First System Forts Nelson and Norfolk were reconstructed with masonry scarps during the Second System (1807-1814). Fortifications were be erected on Craney Island. The fortifications were built to guard the strategic port of Norfolk and its navy yard. And at Hood's Point on the James River Fort Powhatan was reconstructed to guard the approach to Richmond. Sentinels of Savannah the history of the defenses of Savannah, Georgia, from the War of 1812 until the end of World War II. The forts covered include Fort Wayne, Fort Jackson, Fort Pulaski, Fort McAllister, Fort Screven, the Tybee Martello Tower, the Confederate Batteries and the Rebel Naval Flotilla. Old Sea Forts of Florida the forts covered include the well known Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancas at Pensacola, Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortuga's, Castillo de San Marco (Fort Marion) in St. Augustine, and Fort Clinch in Fernandina Beach; as well as the lesser known forts such as the now vanished Fort McRee and the old shaped Martello Towers of Key West. The Defenses of the Lower Mobile Bay The history of the defenses of Mobile Bay, Alabama, from the War of 1812 until the end of World War II. The forts covered include Fort Bowyer, the planned tower at Pass Aux Herons, Fort Morgan, Fort Gaines, Fort Peel, and the Civil War naval battle of Mobile Bay. Old Sea Forts of Louisiana and Mississippi the forts span the Gulf coast from Barataria Pass, Louisiana, to Ship Island, Mississippi. The text includes the well known Fort Jackson on the Mississippi and Fort Pike on the Rigolets; as well as the lesser known forts such as the now vanished Tower Dupre and the half destroyed Fort Livingston.
