Born in 1943. Oriental, Byzantium, and Religious studies in Harvard University (Cambridge, MA). Teaching activity in the USA from 1972 to 1980 (Harvard University and Brown University in Providence). Since 1980 Professor of Languages and Cultures of Christian Orient at the Orientalischen Seminar in the University of Tubingen. Since 2008 emeritus. His main publications include: Byzantine Iconoclasm during the Reign of Leo III, with Particular Attention to the Oriental Sources, Louvain 1973; Byzantine Iconoclasm during the Reign of Constantine V, with Particular Attention to the Oriental Sources, Louvain 1977; Barsauma of Nisibis and Persian Christianity in the Fifth Century, Louvain 1981.
