Excerpt from Select Theses on the Laws of Holland and Zeeland: Being a Commentary of Hugo Grotius Introduction to Dutch Jurisprudence, and Intended to Supply Certain Defects Therein, and to Determine Some of the Celebrated Controversies on the Law of Holland The Translator has spared no pains in endeavouring to render the translation correct and reliable: and has indeed deferred its publication for nearly a twelve month, in order to compare it with the various author ities cited throughout the book, and by submitting some portions of it to the judgment of others, to assure himself of the general correctness of his renderings He is not, however, quite confident but that under the peculiar difficulties of translating from modern law Latin into an acquired language, some errors might have escaped his observation; but these, it is believed, are not of a grave nature, and will no doubt be excused, equally perhaps with the general want of elegance in the language, - a fault which he believes he has frequently fallen into, in endeavouring to be precise in his translation. A different mode of arranging the citations has been adopted, which will be found more convenient than that of incorporating them with the text, as in the original. Most of those laws or treatises of which no Latin translations exist, but which the author has quoted by the Latin titles, have been cited in the translation by their proper Dutch titles.
