Nach einem Kunststudium in Boston wandte sie sich dem Studium der Anglistik und Germanistik zu. 1977 erhielt sie den Bachelor's Degree in Englisch, 1980 den Master's Degree in Germanistik. 1993 promovierte sie zum Dr. phil. an der University of Maryland und ist seither als Dozentin an der University of California taetig.
