OverviewAn aim of this detailed study of medieval woollen sail cloth is to aid its identification in an archaeological context whilst also throwing light on the appearance of sails and medieval navigation in general. Much of the study is based on an analysis of textile fragments found in the attics of churches in Trondenes, Norway, which was once the seat of Viking chiefs. The results are then applied to textile samples recovered from Iceland. The illustrated catalogue is preceded by a discussion of remnants of embellage or packing. The samples are illustrated, often in colour. The report includes an English summary and a translation of the concluding chapter.
