Emery (1922-1992) is recognized as one of the foremost experts on the propagation of California's native plants. Mr. Emery joined the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden in 1950 as its first horticulturalist and in that capacity he was responsible for growing the thousands of plants propagated annually for the Garden. Mr. Emery learned to successfully grow all types of California natives over 20 years of experiments. In addition to his propagation studies, Mr. Emery initiated a native plant selection and breeding program at the Garden and more than a dozen new cultivars have been introduced into the nursery trade as a result of his work.
