Overview

It is the most offensive, and, just occasionally, the funniest word in the English language. But unlike the almost ubiquitous F-word, the C-word has retained its potency and mystique and hard though some people might try, it will never become just another rude word. In this funny, bawdy, scholarly overview of a word which has refused to die Mark Daniel explores the history of the C-word and its furtive uses in letters and literature. He looks at the alternatives and finds them all inadequate - or disgusting - and discovers that whenever the word has been suppressed so have its owners. If the word shocked you when you started reading the book it will seem like an old friend by the time you have finished.

Author Information

Mark Daniel is a novelist, journalist, reluctant Ripperologist and crusading cook, as well as a larger-than-life character with a colourful past. The son of a racehorse trainer, he grew up in Lambourn, Berkshire, the home of British horseracing, and was riding as soon as he could walk. He became a frequent visitor to Longchamps and the training-yards of France and soon became familiar with the particular variety of Franglais ('Qu'est-ce qu'on peut faire avec ce bloody 'orse?') spoken in this gallant cosmopolitan sport.Educated at Ampleforth, he won an Exhibition to Peterhouse, Cambridge, then devoted his year off in France to learning about high and low life, good eating and good cooking, perfecting his French and occasionally sneaking into the races to hobnob with British friends.Throughout his eventful Cambridge career and for some years thereafter, Mark cooked in restaurants or private houses whenever money ran short. Increasingly, however, he earned his living with his pen. As well as his novels, he wrote novelisations, ranging from Ghostbusters to Jack the Ripper, which saw him established as one of the world's leading (if reluctant) Ripperologists. His lifelong interest in children's verse and skipping-songs also led to a series of successful collections. After two years spent in Italy as a tutor and interpreter, Mark found racing resurfacing in his life, with a seven-figure deal for a series of thrillers set on the turf and published worldwide. He bought a house in Co. Carlow, Ireland, and lived there contentedly for a decade of salmon-fishing, novel-writing, excessive Guinness consumption and travelling the world in pursuit of fine food and great sport. He has written food, travel and opinion columns for several national and local newspapers and magazines, including the Express, The Western Morning News, the Irish Independent, Country Illustrated, House and Garden and The Liberal.
