Author Information

Ruby Jean Jones, Ph.D., is a dedicated educator, scholar, veteran, and linguist whose remarkable life journey reflects a deep commitment to learning, service, and cross-cultural understanding. Born on August 27, 1947, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, Dr. Jones began her academic journey with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Coe College in 1969. Her career spans decades of service-from overseeing teenage girls at the Convent of the Good Shepherd to serving twenty years in the U.S. Army, where she specialized in military intelligence and Russian language instruction. After retiring from the military in 1996, Dr. Jones pursued advanced studies in Slavic languages and literature, earning both her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Her dissertation, Echoing Their Lives: Teaching Russian Language and Culture Through the Music of Vladimir S. Vysotsky, reflects her unique passion for integrating music, culture, and language instruction. As an accomplished linguist and independent scholar, she has taught at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and presented at conferences in the United States, Poland, and Sweden. Her academic work has been published in multiple languages, and her teaching has impacted students from diverse backgrounds-from young children to doctoral candidates.
