While Admiral Cornelis Matelieff de Jonge (c. 1570-1632) of the VOC (Vereinigte Oostindische Compagnie or Dutch East India Company) is familiar to many in the Netherlands, less is known about him amongst students and scholars in Southeast Asia. Peter Borschberg, a historian at the National University of Singapore, addresses this oversight with his impressive new volume on Matelieff containing annotated translations related to the Dutch East India Company's 1605-1608 voyage to present-day Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. --Journal of Military History
