Sects, Drugs & Rock n Roll

Overview

Debra Cohen is a singer, songwriter, and seeker whose life has been shaped by music, miracles, and the relentless pursuit of truth. From Boston's New Wave stage lights to studying The Bible in Jerusalem, to quiet moments in Egyptian chapels, her journey carries the imprint of heartbreak, healing, and divine intervention. A survivor with a prophetic ear and a storyteller's soul, Debra weaves faith, trauma, and transformation into every chapter she writes. At 71, she stands as living proof that it's never too late to reclaim your voice, rewrite your story, and rise into the life you were always meant to live. Contains a chapter explaining a neurodivergent personality.

Author Information

Debra Cohen is a singer-songwriter and memoirist whose life traces a winding musical and spiritual path through America's cultural landscape. Born in the 50's at the dawn of television culture, she came of age alongside rock 'n' roll and the Blues, performing in Boston and Nashville before entering Christian music during a season of healing and prayer-until a study-abroad practicum of the Bible in Israel opened her eyes to the historical reality that Jesus Christ was a Jew. That recognition ultimately led her home to Judaism, where her songwriting later transforms into Jewish liturgical and devotional music, a journey explored more fully in Series Two of this memoir. In later life, Debra is also diagnosed as neurodivergent, a relatively new and evolving understanding that brings clarity to her lifelong creativity, sensitivity, faith, and resilience.
