Overview

Section Free is a true story about a young man who was sectioned under a Section Three of the Mental Health Act at the age of seventeen. This story documents the experience of suffering from a serious mental health condition and the battle to be released from a psychiatric unit. Martin was one of only 213 under 18's sectioned into an adult hospital between 2002/03.

Author Information

Martin Haskin was born on 27 June 1985. He had a magical childhood, despite this he began suffering mental health problems at the age of fourteen. He was eventually treated by mental health services when he was sectioned at seventeen. A part of Martin's recovery was to offer his knowledge and experience to high-level mental health service providers, including the NHS and Local Authority. As an active member of many forums, he was elected Chairman of Consensus, a Third Sector group that actively included mental health service users and caregivers. He then pioneered a non-profit social enterprise called Hidden Treasure, which offered supported therapeutic work-environment rehabilitation. Martin has had a lifelong passion in the media and completed his journalism degree with a 2:1 at Northumbria University in June 2014. He currently volunteers for community radio in South Tyneside as a presenter and reporter. Section Free was born from a unique mental health experience.
