Overview"Secrets was written to help children understand the difference between good and bad secrets. Good secrets are fun and make us smile. Bad secrets make us sad, confused or embarrassed. Children need to understand that bad secrets are used to abuse them. People use bad secrets when they emotionally or physically abuse children. Children need to share bad secrets with people they trust so they can be safe. Hopefully this book will help you start the discussion with your child or your students. Secrets is gender, ethnic, and culturally neutral. It is amazing that so many emotions could be shown with simple flower figures, and the use of color. Children can relate to the pure emotions represented, and don't need to generalize because of their gender or race. Hopefully the children may aso be able to use drawing and colors to describe their emotions to help tell their own stories. Parents and teachers, help your children understand that if they feel afraid or uncomfortable they have every right to tell someone! They have the right to feel safe and be safe. If someone hurts them and tells them: ""Don't tell anyone!"" ""Don't talk about it!"" or, ""If you tell someone, I will hurt your family!"" They are telling them bad things. They are being mean to your child. You have to help children protect themselves! The people, who truly love them, want them to be safe! They need to know that they don't have to keep bad secrets. They have to find a person they trust and tell them what is happening to them."
