"""The writing is gripping, as are the stories. . . . Great for research and browsing. Excellent choices to add to the 327.12 area.""—School Library Journal ""A handsome introduction to a perennially appealing topic.""—Booklist"

From the Searchlight Books: Spy Secrets series (4 titles), this volume deals with spies and secret messages. Peterson organizes the subject into four chapters covering the use of disguise, hidden places and messages, codes and ciphers, and technological advances in cryptology. Examples are drawn from varied time periods, primarily during wartime, beginning with the American Revolution. Two full-page 'Meet a Spy' features profile African American singer-dancer Josephine Baker, who spied for the Allies during WWII, and carrier pigeon Cher Ami, who delivered vital information to an Allied base during WWI. Throughout the book, clearly reproduced color photos and portrait paintings provide glimpses of people, places, and artifacts mentioned in the text. The last page features a message for readers to decode. A handsome introduction to a perennially appealing topic. --Booklist -- Journal (4/1/2021 12:00:00 AM) The smoke and mirrors world of espionage is introduced in these thrilling titles. Throughout each book, spy methods, talents, and equipment are detailed. 'Meet a Spy!' boxes are shown in each text. These invite readers to meet real-life spies of all stripes, many of whom were women. (And pigeons, during World War I!) These books are heavily illustrated with historical and modern photos, adding intrigue to the titles. The writing is gripping, as are the stories. Short glossaries, bibliographies, and indexes are included. -VERDICT Great for research and browsing. Excellent choices to add to the 327.12 area. --School Library Journal -- Journal (4/1/2021 12:00:00 AM)
