Secret Santa: The Mystery of the Stereoscope

Overview

When Sam, almost 12, and his sister, Abby, 7, receive an antique stereoscope with a puzzling note and mysterious 3D photographs, they begin a quest to discover the identity of a man dressed as Santa in the pictures. They accidentally find themselves trapped in 1893, where they are befriended by trend-setting reporter and world traveler Nellie Bly; visit the grounds of the Chicago World's Fair; and meet mad scientist Nikola Tesla, all in an effort to return to the present. In the process, they discover that the popular story ""The Night Before Christmas"" is at the heart of an elaborate coverup to conceal the identity of the real Santa. ""Secret Santa: The Mystery of the Stereoscope"" adds a fun and mysterious twist to the origin story of the man behind the beard. This is the first book in the Secret Santa series of middle-grade novels by David Tank. Includes fun facts about actual events that inspired the story. This is the first book in the Secret Santa Mystery series.

Reviews

What a fun and interesting book! I know it's written about, and aimed, at young kids but this book brings a smile to a person of any age! It all revolves around an antique gift Sam and Abby received called a stereoscope, that includes photos of 'SANTA'. Hmmmm....he doesn't look quite right!? And then they go to the mall to visit Santa with their parents and wind up 'lost' in another age..... While trapped in the late 1800's all they want is to get back to their folks and by coincidence meet a couple of famous folks who help them along their way... I loved it, was fascinated by it, and i think you will be too! -- Linda Marie Marsh ---- I won this book from Goodreads, and I am so glad that I did! Super fun read, and after I read it, I gifted it to my 10 year old granddaughter, and she loved it too. We both love mysteries, and this did not disappoint. Fun read. -- Betsy --- Though this book is geared toward the younger reader (ages 6-10) it certainly would make a great read-aloud for the Christmas Eve countdown. The story is told through the eyes of Sam, almost 12, who along with his sister, Abby, 7, receive an old stereoscope from their grandpa. And of course it came with picture cards, several had mysterious images and one was of a rather curious skinny Santa and off the story zoomed! -- Jay Gilbertson
