OverviewSeattle Slim is about a young American with minor eye problems who decides to join the U. S. Air Force. After graduation from the University of California, he becomes an officer in Air Force ground. The tale concerns his military experiences, including working in numerous foreign locations, much of it accompanied by his wife and children. The story covers his serving in the war in Vietnam and his years in the military while his wife struggles with mental illness, which eventually results in their divorce. Later in life, he resigns from the military with two primary wishes. He wants either to use corrective lenses to become a commercial airlines pilot, or as an alternative, he wants to get into politics and become a U. S. Congressman. Finally, he runs for office, becoming a U.S. congressman from Seattle and marries a black lady friend. Thereby, he foregoes any chance of becoming a commercial airlines pilot. The tale concludes with his struggles inside the government trying to face the serious issues of the world.
