OverviewMr. Moore was both a historian and collector. He focused much of his efforts on documenting tokens used in the canning and seafood industries in Dorchester County, Maryland. In order to attribute and document these tokens he spent time talking to folks who had worked in these operations or to the families and relatives of these workers. These tokens were produced and issued to pay workers in these industries in lieu of cash. This 50-plus page book contains the description of over 160 unique picking or canning tokens and numerous local farmers and packers who produced and used these tokens in their business. Mr. Moore provides historical data on these individuals and their businesses such as when they began business and when they ceased operations. Many businesses used multiple farms and plants throughout the county. The book also shows pictures of several related factories, canning labels and business bill heads. A key part of this history is the economic impact that these individuals and businesses had on Dorchester County. You can vividly see a time line where the industry begins around 1840 and grows through its heyday and most active time and then fades away as modern technologies replace the manual processes. The Maryland Token and Medal Society was proud to publish Mr. Moore's initial manuscript in 1994 and due to its continuing popularity we are now republishing it to satisfy requests by numerous token collectors and historians.
