OverviewOriginally published as TWO volumes, this reprint has combined those volumes into one book. A classic book on Typology, found by generations to be one of the best books on this subject. Typology concerns the relationship of the Old Testament to the New Testament. Events, persons, or declarations in the Old Testament are seen as types, superseded by antitypes that point to Christ. For example, Jonah may be seen as the type of Christ in that he emerged from the fish's belly after three days, and thus appeared to rise from death, etc. The author of this work was one of the most popular preachers of his age. He was Jewish by birth, a Rabbi by education, and a Christian by conversion, and a missionary to the Jews. Certainly, he is the very man to open to us Old Testament types. The peculiar circumstances of the author as a natural descendant of Abraham; his having sustained, for a number of years, the office of a Jewish Rabbi, for which he had been regularly educated; gave him an opportunity of obtaining a superior knowledge of the Mosaic dispensation, and of the Jewish ceremonies and customs, both ancient and modern, thus enabling him to embody in these book much valuable information. It was the design of the Author, to confirm the truth of Christianity; to exhibit Christ as the chief among ten thousand, and the altogether lovely; to instruct, edify, and encourage believers; and to direct sinners to a once crucified and now exalted Saviour. There is nothing sectarian in its pages, and it is recommended by clergy of various denominations. Both the private Christian and the well-read theologian will meet with novel and substantial information. It has a practical and unaffected devotional spirit which breathes throughout. The style of Mr. Frey is without ornaments; but it is like the famous walking cane of the old Roman Brutus. If it be unpolished horn on the outside, it is all solid massive gold within. Christians who prefer instruction to narrative; and who love plain, solid, instructive, and devotional reading, to the airy, romantic, and fluff theology of our day will find this book valuable.
