Scrim My Tail: As Told to Margaret Orr

Overview

In 2025, the Mystic Krewe of Barkus named Scrim-New Orleans's most infamous canine escape artist-their grand marshal. In a dramatic leap from a second-story window triggered by a cat ambush, this seventeen-pound Westie mix bolted in April 2024. Surviving hurricanes, a blizzard, and two gunshot wounds while roaming fifty-seven square miles of the city, Scrim's every move was tracked by a network of volunteers, surveillance cameras, and crowdsourced maps. Defined by his dogged fortitude and courage, his exploits became legend: snacking on chili dogs, dodging streetcars, crashing Saints tailgates, and even chatting with a giraffe at the zoo. But it was a New Year's Eve firework scare and a run to Harahan that led to a turning point-and a cozy couch. Pondering his newly acquired leisure time, Scrim gave his first-person account of his adventures to trusted friend and beloved storyteller Margaret Orr. Now, Scrim recounts his journey from runaway rogue to local icon in his own words (with help from Margaret Orr). Scrim My Tail: As Told to Margaret Orr is a heartwarming story of survival, sass, and finding out that, sometimes, the best adventures lead you home.

Reviews

""Only in New Orleans could a spirited runaway pup become a citywide sensation—and then go global! Scrim’s adventure had it all: mystery, mayhem, a dash of Saints resolve, and a whole lot of heart. Scrim didn’t just capture the headlines—he captured our hearts. In a town accustomed to comebacks, Scrim reminded us that sometimes the hero we all need walks in on four paws and refuses to sit still. I’m proud to share his story.” —Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans

Author Information

Margaret Orr is a mom and grandmother who lives in New Orleans with family and a fur boy named Skye who likes to play ball and dig in the garden. Margaret retired from WDSU-TV after forty-five years. She was chief meteorologist and recognized with Emmys for her coverage of hurricanes and tornadoes. Many credit her with helping to save lives during dangerous weather. She was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Press Club of New Orleans and the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters. In 2025, the broadcasters association also inducted her into its hall of fame. Margaret now has time to go to baseball games, pick up grandchildren from school, and help with homework. She still sends out a daily forecast on social media. Some things never change. Matt Rinard is a New Orleans–based artist known for his vibrant and whimsical artwork. His early interest in art led him to attend the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, followed by earning degrees in graphic design and art history from Florida State University. Upon returning to New Orleans, he further refined his craft at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. In 1991, Rinard established Spilled Inc., a printmaking studio located in the historic French Quarter. He went on to open his own gallery on Royal Street in 1998. That same year, he was honored as the official artist for the Mystic Krewe of Barkus—a role he continues to hold, producing the annual limited-edition Barkus print and serving on the krewe’s board of directors. Rinard has exhibited his work in solo shows across major cities, including Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Denver, New York, and New Orleans, as well as internationally in Gronau, Bonn, and Berlin, Germany. He currently resides in Lake Vista with his wife, Cam, their three dogs, and a cat. Known for his wit and passion for his art, Rinard maintains a lighthearted view of his legacy, joking that he hopes for a premature death—so that his artwork may appreciate in value.
