Screening Graham Greene

Overview

Graham Greene (1904-1991) was arguably the greatest English novelist of the Twentieth century and was certainly the greatest writer never to have been awarded the Nobel Prize. His prodigious writing career produced numerous bona fide masterpieces, such as Brighton Rock, The Power and the Glory, The End of the Affair, Burnt Out Case and The Honorary Consul, not to mention his dazzling array of short stories, noted plays and even books for children. Graham Greene was the epitome of the term, the Grand Man of Letters and his correspondence and autobiographical work, together with all his fiction cemented his reputation as a towering artist. Yet Graham Greene's contribution to the history and art of the cinema has always been less well known and more undervalued. Whilst most casual movie buffs will have heard of The Third Man and perhaps will know Graham Greene wrote it, for the most part Greene's incredibly long and varied career in the cinema has received far less attention. Thus, this book gives a comprehensive snapshot of the career of Graham Greene, seen through the prism of cinema. Covering all the principal events in Greene's life and the creation of his major works, it deals with his time as a film reviewer, his forays into screenplay writing, producing and even acting, whilst also describing every film adapted from Greene's fiction. In so doing, it attempts to show how Greene's whole life and career was comprehensively intertwined with the movies and how, as an artist, all aspects of his work were deeply influenced by the language and form of cinema.
