Author Information

Jason Bullock is a lifelong music lover whose passion stretches back to his formative love of hip-hop and his early embrace of learning music. This grew into his own percussion, beat-making, and study of music theory; evolving eventually into a desire to share his learnings with DJs around the world in the wake of an epiphany realization that Theory is the Equalizer . Jason's own informal experience with scratch DJing led him to make the connection that the craft actually had a lot in common with playing a rhythm instrument such as percussion. It was later that he was able to share this knowledge with his brother Dwayne Bullock aka DJ Ronin (Tokyo) , assisting him with applying music theory to the craft of scratching, and leading the brothers to eventually collaborate over several years to write Turntable Method Book 1: A Guide to Scratching; an elementary method book for DJs. Hailing from the suburbs of Washington DC, and now a fixture of the Tokyo underground, DJ Ronin (Tokyo) channels decades of involvement across the spectrum of hip-hop and club music into a distinct, passionate approach to scratching. Spinning alongside revered Japanese staples like the Grammy-nominated Spicy Chocolate, Ronin is a connoisseur selector who seamlessly weaves timeless hip-hop, funk, soul, and RnB, into a highly technical DJing style. Authentic, always.Known to his friends as Dwayne Bullock, his involvement in scratching and DJ culture stretches back to the 90s when he bought his first set of turntables, immersed in early the rave and hip-hop scenes. It's a passion that later came to fruition in Japan, where a chance meeting in a Tokyo record store with Vestax national scratch champion Yohei Hibiki led to Ronin growing into a stalwart of the city's scratch scene. However, Ronin also brings a certain humility to the craft, drawn from an understanding that technical expertise doesn't always come naturally. Sometimes, it needs to be learned. Inspired by his years-long undertaking of applying musical theory to the craft of scratching, alongside his musician brother, Ronin has distilled this knowledge into a tome for the future generation of DJs.
