Readers of the previous editions will feel a sense of familiarity on opening this volume. The layout is similar and a number of diagrams and photographs have reappeared... the sixth edition has evolved to keep in step with those areas of rhinology where advances are occurring. There are now specific chapters on CSF rhinorhoea and sleep apnoea. Endoscopic surgery, allergy, mucocilary dysfunction and immunity receive greater attention. Peripheral issues are covered by chapters on dental pathology, maxillofacial trauma, hypophysectomy and the relationship between upper and lower respiratory tract pathology... The volume is well constructed and should serve regular users for many years. There are 16 colour plates, half of which are used to show examples of rare pathology... There are an appropriate number of black and white photographs, diagrams, and Xrays to enhance the text, and the authors of some chapters have employed flow diagrams to a greater extent. This will be helpful for those who are just gaining familiarity with the subject. Each chapter contains an extensive list of references. This is necessary in a text of this nature because some subjects can not be covered in the detail and more advanced readers will require more information. Overall, however, this edition provides concise detail in all the important areas.
