Dr John Winder is Reader in Healthcare Science at the Institute of Nursing and Health Research, University of Ulster, N. Ireland and a clinical scientist specialising in medical physics and medical imaging. Before coming to the University of Ulster he was a Principal Clinical Scientist in the NI Medical Physics Agency. He is a physics graduate and has a PhD in 3D medical imaging and rapid prototyping. Within the broad field of medical imaging he specialises in 3D visualisation, 3D modelling, the application of medical imagery in surgical planning and patient assessment, manufacture of patient-specific custom implants, image registration, and the use of images for objective measurement. He works with neurosurgical, maxillofacial, orthopaedic and breast surgeons in the use of virtual and real models of human anatomy. This has involved the development of software and image-processing techniques for virtual surgery applied to cranial facial defects, and in the treatment of fibrous dysplasia.
