Reviews

"This 32-page book engages readers right from the start with a discussion of ""The Fan Favorite""--the home run--accompanied by a panoramic photo of a baseball diamond and an appreciative crowd. Anyone interested in either playing or watching baseball will find it interesting and learn a great deal of physical science. The author describes the forces involved when a baseball is pitched and when a batter swings and hits. Each description is fully illustrated with stop-action photos of players in action. There are also pictures of the baseball under various conditions showing the lines of force acting on the ball as it moves. The final chapter describes the effects of temperature, wind, and altitude on the success of a hit. These are followed by a page of ""Batter Facts"" and a page of ""Other Sciences in Action,"" including information on the use of radar to measure the speed of the ball, the repair of tendons by medical science, and the wood used to make baseball bats. The book closes with a glossary, other sources to read, internet links, and an index. The text is aimed at children ages 9 to12 but will be of interest to older children as well. It's small enough for readers who want easy assignments, but it has a surprising amount of science in just a few pages. Even reluctant readers will find information of interest and will learn some science while reading. Many students will be so engaged by what they learn in this book that they will want to know more. They will begin to notice and analyze these forces as they watch or play the game. Some students may even become better batters and pitchers after increasing their understanding of the forces acting on a baseball!-- ""NSTA Recommends"""
