Overview

Tony takes the reader on a personal journey providing a ""drone-eyed"" view of the complex landscape that comprises the many sciences that underpin gardening. Commencing with the formation of planet Earth, we are taken on a tour touching on the highlights of plant evolution, the vast use that humans have for plants, through their cultivation and care, and onwards to modern production techniques that are useful here on Earth and for future space travel. With a relaxed conversational style Tony provides a glimpse of the complex world of plants and our relationship with them, sowing the seeds that hopefully will germinate an interest in the sciences that influence gardening.

Author Information

I have been a keen gardener for many years. Towards the end of my career as a science teacher I was lucky enough to be able to study Advanced Horticulture at Capel Manor College, Enfield and I am now a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture. Over the years I have often been asked: How can I make my garden greener? What plants should I choose and where should they be planted? How best can I grow them? Something told me that my science knowledge and passion for gardening would sit well together and I began to think ... the seeds of an idea were sown. Three years ago I gave a talk to my local Horticultural Society, the idea had germinated and grown into Science for the Gardener, a useful PowerPoint Presentation for gardening clubs and schools. And now Science for the Gardener, the book, which attempts to answer some of those often asked questions in a fun and light-hearted manner, with colourful pictures and diagrams along the way. Definitely not meant to be a text book but hopefully an easy and enjoyable read which will appeal not only to gardeners of all ages but to school children, to students, indeed to anyone who may be interested in the study of horticulture and the green world around us. With subjects ranging from the beginnings of plant life to genetic modification and climate change there is something for everyone. I am convinced that a little science knowledge can be extremely beneficial in getting the best from our gardens and believe that as your garden begins to grow, your passion for gardening and its science will grow along with it, just as mine did.
