Overview

Excerpt from Scattering Problems in Nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics, Vol. 2: One Particle in One Dimension In our Opinion the difficulties which have been mentioned stam in part from an incomplete understanding of the mathematical questions involved. It is these questions to which we devote our attention. Generally the solution of a scattering problem involves related difficulties concerning the boundary condi tions, uniqueness, completeness, and the determination of a Green's function. There is a well-developed theory available for answering such questions about one-particle problems in one dimension. This theory can be extended to one particle three-dimensional problems. The extension to many-particle problems is less immediate and, at this time, less rigorous. However, the one-particle problem furnishes a useful and clarifying guide toward the correct formulation in many-particle systems. In this paper we shall consider one-particle one-dimensional systems. Many-dimensional many-particle cases will be treated in future reports.
