Reviews

'Scarlett's Story' tells the story of Scarlett Cunningham, a pivotal character in Book 1 of the Amethyst Series, 'The Amethyst Necklace'. Orphaned at the age of nine, Scarlett grows up determined to create a better life for herself. Her beauty and strength of character help her to overcome poverty, hardship and heartbreak as she grapples with a life filled with both tragedy and joy, although the strange gift of second sight can sometimes feel like a burden to her. Carefully researched, this book is set against the background of Brighton and Occupied France during the Second World War, providing fascinating detail of the work of Resistance fighters who risked their lives leading countless pilots, shot down over enemy territory, to freedom.. From humble beginnings Scarlett becomes a woman of consequence and fortitude who clings to the hope that the man she loves will return to her one day. The ending of this emotional rollercoaster of a book brought tears to my eyes. I loved this book. It was heartbreaking to see how hard life could be for a child who had lost everything and the things she had to do to survive and make a better life for herself. I was totally immersed in wartime Brighton and France - the detail in the writing brought it all vividly to life. Didn't want it to end and am now eagerly awaiting the next book from Susan Griffin
