Overview

Clarrie Grimmett was a persistent, amazingly accurate and brilliant leg-spin bowler, who spun his way to fame, ranking alongside Bill O'Reilly and Shane Warne as the greatest of their tribe in all Test match history. His deliveries were spun so hard they hummed, dipping away in a lovely curve with the trajectory of an archer's arrow. His nickname was Scarlet, ever an air of mystery about him and always ready to help his teammates. In 248 first-class matches - from 1911-1941 - Grimmett took 1424 wickets at an average of 22.38. He took five wickets or more on 33 occasions. If you equate a five wicket bag with a century in an innings, Grimmett's bowling record is better than Don Bradman's batting figures of 117 centuries in 234 matches. Grimmett was the first Test bowler to reach 200 wickets. In 37 Tests he captured 216 wickets at an average of 24.21. Grimmett toured England in 1926, and 1934, teaming with O'Reilly to form the greatest spin partnership of all time. For all his many abilities, sign-writer, artist, photographer, Clarence Victor Grimmett loved cricket best of all: it was his breath of life. Ashley Mallett has written a wonderful story that not only takes us back to the formative days of Australian cricket but seeks to relate a story relevant for today. AUTHOR: Ashley Mallet is a former South Australian and Australian off-spinner. He played in 38 Tests and 9 One-day Internationals between 1968 and 1980. In 91 first class matches for South Australia Mallett took 390 wickets at an average of 24.44, second only to Clairie Grimmett. In 183 first class games he claimed 693 wickets at 26.27. He was Australia's most successful off spin bowler since Hugh Trumble, who played for Australia between 1890 and 1904. Mallett took 8 for 59 at the Adelaide Oval v Pakistan in 1972-73; the best test performance in the twentieth century at that ground. Since retiring he has been a successful coach and has written 26 books. b/w photographs
