Volume II: The Broken Path shifts the conflict from the solid ground of the desert to the unstable, psychic terror of the ocean.The Dead Water Following their victory in the Sand Kingdom, the Unit pursues the next Spirefall: The Pirate (#8). They secure passage on the Hollow Wake, a ship captained by Gull, a man whose head floats in a jar of seawater. They enter the Dead Water, a region where the currents do not move and the ocean is a sentient pressure system known as Thal'Krax. Arzuq Valen discovers that his density is a liability in a world where the floor is fluid; he must negotiate with the ocean rather than break it.The Betrayal The team survives the sea only to be dismantled on land. Ilea, the alien analyst who has guided them since the beginning, reveals her true mission. She has been ""herding"" them to an extraction point to ensure the Vessel is captured intact. Her brother, the Alien Officer Vaerix, ambushes the team. Using anti-gravity technology that neutralizes Arzuq's weight, they capture Ethan Rho.The Calibration Ethan is taken to the Observational Sanctum, an alien fortress in orbit. There, the administrator Keth-Null subjects him to Calibration-a brutal process of psychological and physical torture designed to ""scrub"" away his humanity, memories, and hesitation. Ethan is transformed into a hollow, obedient weapon. To test his new efficiency, Null deploys him to the Tide Conclave, a neutral underwater city. The ""new"" Ethan vaporizes the city and its 14,000 inhabitants to acquire the Pirate Spirefall, viewing the massacre simply as ""removing obstruction.""The Glitch On the ground, a broken Cael and Arzuq track the aliens to an abandoned facility, Node 7. There, they do not find Ethan, but they find Nuisolli (Subject N)-a fractured, hallucinating prototype who can warp reality because he does not understand the rules of physics. The volume ends with the team shattered, the Vessel turned into a monster, and the survivors walking into the north with a madman, preparing to fight a war they have already lost.
