Overview

Luke 2 tells the story of the birth and early life of Jesus Christ. Caesar Augustus calls for a census, and Joseph travels with Mary to Bethlehem, where she gives birth to Jesus and lays Him in a manger, because there was no room in the inn. Nearby, shepherds are watching their flocks when an angel appears to them, announcing the Savior's birth and filling the sky with a heavenly host praising God. The shepherds hurry to find the baby and share the news with great joy. Later, Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the temple, where Simeon, a devout man led by the Holy Spirit, blesses the child and proclaims Him the light to the Gentiles. The prophetess Anna also gives thanks to God and speaks of Jesus to all who awaited redemption. The chapter ends with Jesus growing in wisdom and favor, amazing the teachers in the temple at twelve years old, and continuing His obedience to His earthly parents.
