Author Information

Marita Golden is an award-winning author, professor of writing, and cofounder of the Hurston/Wright Foundation, a national organization that serves as a resource center for African American writers. She has been featured in several magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Essence. Lisa Renee Pitts is an award-winning actress in theater, television, and film, as well as an accomplished audiobook narrator. She has been seen Off-Broadway, in Europe, and in regional theaters across the United States, performing leading roles in such prominent plays as A Raisin in the Sun, Doubt, Waiting for Lefty, Valley Song, and Our Town. Her television appearances include The Shield and Law and Order, and she played the recurring role of Allison Sawyer on the hit family drama Lincoln Heights for the ABC Family Channel. Lisa's audiobook titles include biographies, fiction, nonfiction and children's novels, including Pushkin and the Queen of Spades by Alice Randall, for which she won an AudioFile Earphones Award for excellence in narration. Other notable titles are Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza, Better Than I Know Myself by Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant, and My Name Is Not Angelica by Scott O'Dell. Lisa is a graduate of Rutgers University, where she received her B.F.A. in Theater Arts. She lives in Burbank, California. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, M. J. Fievre moved to the United States in 2002. She currently writes from Miami. M. J.'s publishing career began as a teenager in Haiti. At nineteen-years-old, she signed her first book contract with Hachette-Deschamps, in Haiti, for the publication of a Young Adult book titled La Statuette Malefique. Since then, M. J. has authored nine books in French that are widely read in Europe and the French Antilles. In 2013, One Moore Book released M.J.'s first children's book, I Am Riding, written in three languages: English, French, and Haitian Creole. In 2015, Beating Windward Press published M.J.'s memoir, A Sky the Color of Chaos, about her childhood in Haiti during the brutal regime of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. She is also author of Happy, Okay?: Poems about Anxiety, Depression, Hope, and Survival and Badass Black Girl. Nathan McCall, author of Them and Makes Me Wanna Holler, has worked as a journalist for the Washington Post. Currently he teaches African-American studies at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
