Despite the fact that Saved includes a scene in which a baby is stoned to death, the author in his introduction terms his play almost irrepressibly optimistic. Saved played the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 1965 until it was forced to close down by the police, its depiction of violence from boredom too specific for the law. Sir Laurence Olivier considers it sacramental catharsis ; Penelope says that it will certainly pass into the canon of works that turn out to have affected future thinking. All in all, Saved appears to be a show stopper and a theatrical milestone. (Kirkus Reviews)
